Quarter Past and Half Past

A template for teachers to model analog to digital time mapping with Year 2 students.

Objective: Reading and writing quarter past, half past and quarter to on analog and digital clocks

  1. Blank template

  2. Model it

    Work through one time at a time with the class:

    • Draw the hands on the clock. Talk about where the long hand points for quarter past, half past and quarter to.
    • Write the time in words in the box, for example "Quarter past 2".
    • Write the same time in digital form on the line, for example "2:15".
    • Join the three with a line so students see they are the same time shown three ways.

  3. Students have a go

    Give each student a copy of the template. Call out a time, or show one on a clock, and have them fill in all three parts of a row before checking together.
